Brain wellness is influenced by many parts of our daily lives—including sleep, nutrition, movement, stress management, and the environments we create around ourselves.

Aromatherapy can be a beautiful addition to those everyday wellness practices. Certain essential oils are especially loved for aromas associated with focus, relaxation, clarity, and a sense of calm.

Here are five of my favorites.

1. Rosemary

Rosemary has traditionally been associated with memory and mental clarity. Its fresh, herbal aroma makes it one of my favorite oils for times when I want to create a focused environment.

Try diffusing rosemary while reading, studying, journaling, or working.

Frankincense has a warm, grounding aroma that pairs beautifully with meditation and quiet reflection.

I especially love it when creating a peaceful space for slowing down, breathing deeply, and stepping away from the distractions of the day.

4. Lavender

Lavender is one of the best-known oils for creating a calming atmosphere.

Because rest and stress management are important pieces of overall wellness, lavender is a wonderful addition to an evening routine. Try diffusing it while winding down, meditating, reading, or preparing for bed.

5. Copaiba

Copaiba comes from the resin of Copaifera trees native to South America and contains a naturally occurring compound called beta-caryophyllene.

Copaiba has also attracted scientific interest, including research exploring its biological properties. While that research should not be interpreted to mean that copaiba essential oil treats brain injury or neurological disease, it makes this fascinating botanical worth learning more about.

Simple Ways to Enjoy Essential Oils

You don't need an elaborate routine.

Diffuse: Add the recommended amount to your diffuser to create the atmosphere you want.

Inhale: Some oils can be enjoyed aromatically according to the manufacturer's directions.

Topical use: When appropriate for the particular product, dilute according to its instructions before applying to the skin.

Always read product directions and discontinue use if irritation or sensitivity occurs.

Creating Your Own Wellness Ritual

Essential oils are just one piece of a larger wellness picture.

Good nutrition, restorative sleep, appropriate movement, stress management and meaningful moments of rest all contribute to supporting our overall well-being.

Sometimes something as simple as a familiar aroma can become part of a ritual that reminds us to slow down, focus or rest.
